RedactChat provides a seamless and secure way to interact with AI platforms without exposing sensitive information. Here's a detailed breakdown of the process.

Automatic Interception

When you are on a supported AI platform (like ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) and attempt to upload a file, RedactChat springs into action. It is designed to detect the upload event—whether you drag-and-drop a file or use the site's upload button—and pause it before any data leaves your browser.

The Sanitization Panel

Instead of immediately uploading, the RedactChat modal appears. This is your control center for data privacy. Inside the panel, you'll find:

  • Document Preview: A real-time view of your document's text content.
  • Detected PII: Our local scanner automatically highlights potential sensitive information like emails, phone numbers, and social security numbers.
  • Sanitization Modes: You have full control over how to handle the detected PII.

Sanitization Modes Explained

  • Redact: Replaces sensitive data with solid blocks (████████), completely obscuring the original information.
  • Tokenize: Replaces sensitive data with descriptive placeholders, like [EMAIL_1] or [PHONE_NUMBER_1]. This preserves the context for the AI without revealing the actual data.
  • Delete: Completely removes the sensitive information from the document.
  • None: If you're confident the file contains no sensitive data, you can choose this option to upload the original document as is.

As you switch between modes, the document preview updates instantly, so you know exactly what the AI will receive.

Secure, Sanitized Upload

Once you are satisfied with the preview, you click "Continue Upload." RedactChat then takes the sanitized version of your document and allows the upload to the AI platform to proceed. The original, sensitive version of your file never leaves your computer.

⚙️ Configuration & Settings

You can customize RedactChat by clicking its icon in your Chrome toolbar. From the popup, you can:

  • Set your preferred default sanitization mode to speed up your workflow.
  • Enable or disable RedactChat for specific AI platforms based on your needs.
  • View basic statistics on how many files you've sanitized and protected.
